Assistant Cook – Meals on Wheels Redcliffe
Hours – Monday, Wednesday & Friday 5.30am – 9.30am (12hrs p/week)
Key Relationships and Responsibilities
The Assistant Cook is responsible to the Chef and carries out all functions as required by the Chef. The Assistant Cook must be able to replace the Chef during absences on sick or recreation leave. The Assistant Cook must take full responsibility of cooking and ordering when the Chef is absent. The Assistant Cook is required to communicate effectively with kitchen staff and volunteers who report to the position.
Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Chef in the production of soups, desserts, texture modified meals and support the preparation, packaging and distribution of quality nutritious meals to clients of Meals on Wheels.
Duties
- Assist the Chef to ensure the Meals on Wheels kitchen operates efficiently and effectively;
- Assist the Chef to supervise and train kitchen staff and volunteers in their duties;
- Prepare all meals in accordance with dietary requirements including texture modified meal requirements and ensure meal presentation is of a high standard;
- Ensure sufficient levels of desserts and soups are available for the daily fresh meals and frozen menu. Ensure all meals, soups and desserts are correctly labelled. Ensure sufficient stock levels of frozen soups and desserts as per stock take;
- Undertake training and accreditation to ensure all operational procedures of the kitchen are in-line with relevant standards and legislation. For example, Food Safety Supervisor Accreditation, First Aid, Fire Safety;
- Assist the Chef in ensuring that ALL requirements of the Food Safety Program are complied with;
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Appropriate qualifications and/or experience in the production of meals in a commercial kitchen;
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and deal professionally with the staff, volunteers and clients;
- Knowledge of Food Safety Requirements;
- Ability to operate all foodservice equipment;
- Good written and verbal communication skills;
- Computer shills, proficient in Word and Excel
- Ability to work well in a team environment;
- Have a strong work ethic and a positive attitude;
- Ability to maintain kitchen and other working areas in a clean and sanitary condition;
- Ability to instruct volunteers in proper food preparation and serving methods.
Preferred Skills
- Food Safety Supervisor Qualifications;
- Knowledge of the cooking and chilling times and temperatures in accordance to the Food Safety Standards;
- Experience in managing small teams;
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines;
- General knowledge of the methods and materials used in the preparation and presentation of healthy nutritious meals (soups, main meals, desserts);
- A demonstrated ability to maintain kitchen and other working areas in a clean and sanitary condition.
